Journal of Marketing Behavior Call for Papers
The European Marketing Academy (EMAC) and now publishers invite submissions to the new Journal of Marketing
Behavior (JMB), which will begin publishing in 2014.
Editorial Aims. JMB targets high-quality articles from researchers around the world. Klaus Wertenbroch (INSEAD) will
serve as launching editor, supported by leading marketing scholars as Associate Editors and members of the Editorial Review
Board. Associate Editors will be Darren Dahl (U of British Columbia), Ravi Dhar (Yale U), Teck Ho (UC Berkeley), Joel Huber
(Duke U), Werner Reinartz (U of Cologne), Baba Shiv (Stanford U), and Uri Simonsohn (Wharton, U of Pennsylvania).
JMB will publish theoretically grounded research that describes and explains human behavior in the marketplace, focusing on
both consumers and managers. First, papers should make theoretical advances, offering and empirically testing new behavioral
theory or extending or integrating extant theory. JMB will require full transparency about data collection and analyses.
Second, papers should focus on behavioral outcomes more than on psychological processes. Third, behaviors should, at least
in principle, translate into clearly detectable choices. Fourth, JMB construes the marketplace broadly, not only in terms
of monetary exchanges between firms and customers but also in terms of non-monetary choices and preferences (e.g., political
or religious beliefs and choices; cultural exchanges of stories and ideas; etc.). JMB particularly welcomes research into
online behavior.
Methodologically, the focus on marketplace behavior calls for experimental or quantitative analyses of behavioral data, either
in the lab, in the field, or online. JMB encourages field tests and applications of underlying theory. Short of presenting
actual field data, authors should at least describe implications of their theories for real behavior in the field to explain
how these theories matter as determinants of real-world behavior. This emphasis extends well beyond the usual brief
discussion of managerial implications.
Both the substantive and methodological orientation of JMB point toward research that combines questions and theories from
economics, social psychology, and/or behavioral decision research, with the clear objective of uncovering and explaining
behaviorally relevant phenomena. While such research appears across a wide variety of journals in marketing and consumer
research, JMB will provide a focused outlet for it.
Editorial Policy. Beyond original empirical research, JMB also invites several other types of articles. First, JMB
aims to publish review articles that integrate extant behavioral research into marketplace phenomena. Second, the current
debate about research ethics and practices, especially in the social sciences and consumer research, laments the lack of
replications of original work. Yet, leading academic journals have been reluctant to publish replications. Thus, JMB will
consider publication of replications of controversial previous findings or of systematic (based on sound methodology)
failures to replicate accepted findings. These replications will ultimately contribute greatly to advancing scientific
knowledge and thus deserve consideration as legitimate contributions to behavioral science, just as they do in the
physical and life sciences. Third, JMB invites shorter research notes that reliably identify new marketplace behaviors that
are not yet theoretically grounded. That is because scientific progress requires a feedback loop between discovery and
theory development.
JMB will provide review decisions to authors within 90 days and targets no more than two rounds of reviews. Submissions will
usually be reviewed by two reviewers and an Associate Editor. Please send submissions to:

APA Graduate Student Research Awards
The Science Directorate of the American Psychological Association is managing two award programs for graduate student research
in 2013. For both awards, applications are welcome from graduate students of psychology in any research specialty area. The
application deadline for both awards is Sept. 16, 2013. If you have questions, please contact the
Science Directorate via email or telephone at (202) 336-6000.
APA Dissertation Research Awards
The Dissertation Research Award assists science-oriented doctoral students of psychology with research costs. In 2013, the
Science Directorate will grant up to 30 awards of $1,000 each, as well as several awards of up to $5,000 each to students whose
dissertation research reflects excellence in scientific psychology.
Find more details about this award,
including eligibility requirements and application materials.
Early Graduate Student Researcher Awards
The Early Graduate Student Research Awards, sponsored by the APA Science Student Council, recognize students who demonstrate
outstanding research abilities early in their graduate training (i.e., within the first three years of doctoral study). Both
overall research experience and specific completed research projects are considered in selecting awardees.
Up to three awards are given each year, drawn from basic science, applied science, and interdisciplinary science areas. Each
Early Graduate Student Research Award is in the amount of $1,000.

Applications now being accepted for late-breaking poster session at APA Convention
To enable more graduate students to attend the 2013 APA Convention, to be held July 31-August 4 in Honolulu, Hawaii, APA is sponsoring a
special late-breaking poster session for cutting-edge research by graduate students in psychological science. This poster session, "Cutting
Edge Research from Emerging Psychological Scientists,” is being organized by the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Science Student
Council (SSC) and the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) Science Committee.
Submissions for this session are due March 1, 2013, and notifications of selection decisions will be sent by March 20, which will enable
presenters to submit separate applications for the APA Student Travel Award before its April 1 application deadline. In addition, graduate
students who are APAGS members and first authors on a poster or presentation at the convention are eligible to have their convention early
registration fee waived. Details about how to get the fee waived will be sent to eligible students in the early spring.

APA offers Advanced Training Institutes for summer 2013
The American Psychological Association (APA) will sponsor four Advanced Training Institutes (ATIs) in the summer of 2013. These intensive
training programs are hosted at research institutions across the country. They expose advanced graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, new
and established faculty, and other researchers to state-of-the-art research methods and emerging technologies. Participants also have the
opportunity to meet other scientists with related interests.
The four ATIs are listed below. Complete information about these programs can be viewed on the
Advanced Training Institute's website.
-
Structural Equation Modeling in Longitudinal Research
University of California, Davis
May 28-June 1, 2013
Application Deadline: March 20
-
Exploratory Data Mining in Behavioral Research
University of California, Davis
June 3-7, 2013
Application Deadline: March 20
-
Research Methods with Diverse Racial & Ethnic Groups
Michigan State University
June 10-14, 2013
Application Deadline: March 25
-
Non-Linear Methods for Psychological Science
University of Cincinnati
June 17-21, 2013
Application Deadline: March 25
APA chose to sponsor these particular ATIs in response to continued interest among researchers. When offered previously, these ATIs drew
substantial numbers of participants and received highly positive ratings.
The ATIs on Structural Equation Modeling and Exploratory Data Mining will be held at UC Davis in consecutive weeks. In order to help make
it feasible for people to attend both of these ATIs, participants who are accepted and register for both sessions will receive a 20% discount
on their tuition for each institute.
Tuition for each ATI ranges from $300 to $1200, with students, post-docs, and APA members paying lower tuitions. Participants may also apply
for financial assistance.
APA arranges for group rates at on-campus or nearby lodgings and encourages all ATI participants to stay at the same location. Prices for
accommodations have been negotiated at competitive group rates. For the UC Davis and Michigan State ATIs, the institutes will be held in
the same conference hotel as the group lodging. The Cincinnati ATI will be held on-campus and participants will have the option to stay
in very economically priced on-campus housing.
The APA Science Directorate also maintains a
list of training opportunities
for psychological scientists that are offered outside of APA. This list is updated throughout the year. Suggestions for additional programs
to include on the list can be sent by email.
Note that ATI application deadlines begin in March. Applications are available at the
Advanced Training Institute website and
must be submitted electronically through each institute's webpage. For more information,
contact ATI or (202) 336-6000.
